We we say it’s a beautiful spring day, we don’t mean green grass and budding flowers. This is what 71 degrees north looks like, six days before the calendar reads May 1st.

Arctic inhabitants have a special relationship with the sun. Its 2-month absence creates a deep longing in the core of our being, and an overwhelming appreciation when we’re reunited. Phototherapy: Exposing oneself to images of bright, warm, distant summer days, in the midst of a 7-month long winter.

Inside, looking out, icicles mesmerize. Ice castles: Blue, gray and white.

Winter Clothes

Two nights ago, while we slept, 40 centimeters of snow fell silently to the ground. Instead of the whipping, wailing winds that sculpt snow formations in some areas and leave bare ground in others, we awoke to a gentle blanket of fresh, white powder. The ordinary clothed in extraordinary winter clothes.

Ever-changing Light

From my house, I view the mountains and sea and never cease to be fascinated by the play of light and shadow. The solid rock and steady waves displaying different faces throughout the day. And I contemplate how the circumstances around me affect the constants within me?
