Sunrise 10:30 AM – Sunset 12:26 PM: THE SUN’S BACK!

Today, at the Nordkapp plateau, the sun made its first appearance of 2012.  In Honningsvåg,  it popped up to say “Hi!” two days ago.  We were out of town, so I didn’t get to wave to the sun until today.

I’m fascinated by the fact that on its third day above the horizon, the sun’s already hanging around for two hours.  Maybe its just as glad to see us as we are to see it.

At my children’s preschool, the agenda for today was a Sun Party (Solfest).  Along Sjøgata (Main Street), the pink glow of the sun’s rays lit up many cheery faces.  There’s no denying it:  It’s party time!

And after two months without the sun, not much can dampen my spirits.  Not even the fact that this afternoon the weather forecast is -4 C (25 F) and winds between 18-20 mps (40-45 mph).  The local residents say that when the sun returns it brings the cold with it.  And it’s true – the coldest months are January, February and March.

A “solfest” sounds fun…that’s called celebrating the simple things in life and the beauty that God created.
